Play-based Early Childhood Education is ideal for children under 6, but there is a shortage of trained educators in Canada. Low wages, poor working conditions, and lack of respect lead to high turnover and discourage new recruits. Keynote by Dr. Emis Akbari, Senior Policy Fellow, Atkinson Centre for Society and Child Development.

This year the theme of our Summer Institute is, The Early Years: In, ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø, and For the Environment. The event will focus on the effects of climate change on the early years, and how we can incorporate environmental responsibility into the early years to support young children towards climate responsibility and action.

Presenters include Kerry McCuaig, Atkinson Centre Fellow In Early Childhood Policy, Atkinson Centre for Society and Child Development, and Dr. Emis Akbari, Senior Policy Fellow, Atkinson Centre for Society and Child Development.

Olivia Chow, lawyer Stephen Shyrman and the Atkinson Centre held a virtual roundtable. The Government of Canada is seeking stakeholder feedback to help inform new Early Learning and Child Care legislation.
